About Hugs for Heads

"It started with one hat, one friend, and one very important mission."

Hello! I’m Kelly, the hands and heart behind Hugs for Heads.

I have been a fiber artist and crochet enthusiast for most of my life, but in 2023, my passion for yarn took on a deeper meaning. My dear friend Denise Downes was a warrior. Throughout her years-long battle with cancer, I watched her face every challenge with grace. However, one thing she struggled with was finding a hat that didn't just cover her head, but made her feel like herself—stylish, confident, and comfortable.

I picked up my hook and designed what is now known as the "My Denise" Slouchy Hat. Seeing the light in her eyes when she put it on was a turning point for me. It wasn't just a garment; it was a hug she could wear every day.

Turning Grief into Action

When Denise passed, I knew I couldn't let that spark go out. I founded Hugs for Heads to ensure that anyone facing a difficult journey—whether it’s health-related or just a cold New England winter—has access to a "hug" made of the softest, most premium fibers.

Why I Do What I Do:

  • The Craft: I believe in the power of handmade. Every stitch in my Leominster studio is made with intentionality and high-quality yarns like merino, bamboo, and plush chenille's.

  • The Mission: I don't just want to sell hats; I want to support the community that supported Denise. That’s why a portion of every single sale is donated directly to the Cancer Support Fund of Central Mass.

  • The Connection: Whether I’m designing a custom handbag or a beginner-friendly pattern, my goal is to foster a community of makers and supporters who believe that a small, handmade gesture can change someone's day.
"Every piece I create is a tribute to the strength I saw in Denise. When you wear a Hugs for Heads original, you’re wearing a piece of that strength, too." — Kelly

A portion of all proceeds is donated to the Cancer Support Fund of Central Mass in loving memory of Denise Downes♡

Thank you for being part of this journey.

I can't wait to show it off!  Round one of your works at the beach and I have not taken it off all day.  From the beach right to dinner!  I got a lot of compliments; you do great work.
